What garage door repair actually costs
You get the number before the work starts, not after. If we cannot give you a number over the phone, we will tell you why rather than booking a visit to find out.
Why published
Most companies here will not put a number on a page
The standard practice in this trade is a free estimate that exists to get a technician standing in your garage before any price is mentioned. It works, which is why it is standard. It also means you cannot compare two companies without taking two mornings off.
Publishing bands costs us the ability to price a job by how urgent you sound. That seems like a reasonable trade.

What the common jobs run
Awaiting Gold Shield’s own numbers
This table is built and will render as soon as real bands are supplied. It is empty rather than filled with Chicago market averages, because a published price is a commercial commitment and those numbers are not this company’s to make.
Bands are needed for: torsion spring replacement, cable replacement, roller replacement, opener repair, opener replacement, off-track recovery, section replacement, and a standard service call.
Call for a firm number on your door. Ranges cover the common cases and are not a quote.
What moves it
What changes the number
- Door size. A single door and a 16-foot double are different weights, which means different springs and different labour.
- Spring cycle rating. A 10,000-cycle spring costs less up front than a 20,000-cycle one and is replaced roughly twice as often.
- Insulated or not. Insulated doors are heavier, so the hardware carrying them is rated higher.
- What else broke. A snapped cable that pulled the door off its track is two repairs, and we will say so before starting.
- Access. A detached alley garage with no power and a tight approach takes longer than a suburban driveway.
- When you call. After-hours and holiday work carries a premium. It is disclosed on the phone, never added afterwards.
