What happens

What is actually going on

A sectional door stays in its track because the rollers are held in line by even tension on both lift cables. Lose that on one side — a snapped cable, a seized roller, a car bumping the track — and the door racks out of square and the rollers jump the channel.

At that point the door is usually resting on whatever it caught on, still partly loaded by the springs. Running the opener will make it worse, and often turns a hardware repair into a bent-section replacement.

Off-track doors are more common on detached city garages than on attached suburban ones, mostly because the structures move more and the openings are older and less square.

What you would notice

• The door is visibly crooked, or one side has dropped
• A roller is sitting outside the track
• The door is jammed partway and will not move in either direction
• A loud metallic bang followed by the door stopping at an angle
• The door is resting against the frame or the car

What we do

What the visit involves

1. Stop using the opener. Do not try to force the door level.
2. We secure the door and release the spring tension before anything is moved.
3. Reseat the door in the track and check every section for damage.
4. Repair the underlying cause — almost always a cable, roller, or bent track.
5. Rebalance, re-align, and test the full cycle including safety reverse.

What people ask

Can I push it back into the track myself?

No. The door is still connected to loaded springs. Forcing it typically bends the section, and a bent section is a much more expensive repair than the cable that caused it.

Will the whole door need replacing?

Usually not. If it came off cleanly it is hardware and realignment. Whole-door replacement comes in when sections are creased, and we will show you which it is rather than telling you over the phone.
